Lisa Nilsson’ Extremely Detailed Quilled Paper Carpet

Artist Lisa Nilsson's body of work is associated with a common thread of complexity and breathtaking detail. Jardin and Gospel are the latest additions to her Tapis Series, which introduces Japanese mulberry and gilt-edged quilled strips of paper arranged into impressive arrays of colors and patterns that are a testament to her incredible abilities. Beginning from the center and working progressively outwards, Nilsson’s slow paper creations can take several months to complete, but the final results are extremely striking.

Jardin, the most difficult piece the artist has created to date, was inspired by the color and style of an Islamic carpet. The ornate floral forms were invented in the eight months it took to finalize the 27″ by 34″ inch frame, woven symmetrically into the rich red-wine colors.
