Pejac’s Series “Redemption” Uses Pressed Wood as Canvas

Pejac’s hottest series brings an urban resource into the studio rather. Utilizing pressed wood as a pseudo-canvas, Pejac draws with black ink and pencil to make flowers in the works’ foregrounds, birds, and soft deer. These natural elements showcase the wooden medium’s source, emphasizing how natural surroundings are constantly being chopped down and built over.

“The beauty of the wood that was pressed seems to hide the conceit of man with nature in its relation,” said Pejac. “These panels possess some aesthetic warmth but in the same time a sense of devastation, making it quite contradictory, which refers to my way of understanding art. Expressing myself on thousands of little parts of wood feels like ‘tattooing’ to the stripped skins of trees. Each drawing in this Redemption series is a tribute to nature. Every other subject could have already been frivolous.”
