Namibia

Formally known as the Republic of Namibia, the country is situated in the southern part of the African continent. To its west lies the expansive Atlantic Ocean, while it is landlocked on its other sides by multiple nations. The northern boundaries of Namibia are defined by Angola and Zambia, whereas its eastern and southern borders are with Botswana and South Africa, respectively. Intriguingly, while Namibia does not share a direct land boundary with Zimbabwe, the two countries are separated by a mere 200-meter stretch of riverbed at their nearest points. Namibia achieved its sovereignty from South Africa on March 21, 1990, after the conclusion of the Namibian War of Independence.

Geography

Namibia encompasses a total land area of approximately 824,292 square kilometers. The nation's landscape is strikingly diverse, featuring deserts like the Namib and the Kalahari, as well as plateaus and mountain ranges. The majority of the country is arid or semi-arid in terms of climate, largely due to its geographical positioning and topographical features.

Climate

The climate in Namibia varies depending on the region but is generally arid to semi-arid. The coastal regions usually experience cooler temperatures, thanks to the cold Benguela current from the Atlantic Ocean, whereas inland areas can get extremely hot, especially during the summer months.

Political History

The history of Namibia is marked by colonial rule, primarily under German and then South African governance. It was not until the Namibian War of Independence, which took place from 1966 to 1990, that the country finally became autonomous. The end of this armed conflict set the stage for Namibia to become a democratic republic, with its own constitution and elected government.

Population and Languages

Namibia has a relatively low population density, given its large land area. According to recent estimates, the population is approximately 2.5 million people. English is the official language, but indigenous languages such as Oshiwambo, Herero, and Nama are also spoken. The multicultural nature of Namibia is reflected in its linguistics, traditions, and customs.

Economy

Namibia has a mixed economy, heavily dependent on mining and agriculture. The country is a significant producer of diamonds, uranium, and other minerals. Agriculture, although impacted by the arid climate, forms another crucial part of the economy, with livestock farming being more predominant than crop farming.

Currency

The currency used in Namibia is the Namibian Dollar (NAD), which is pegged to the South African Rand.

Religion

The majority of Namibians identify as Christians, with a significant number being members of Protestant churches. However, indigenous beliefs and customs also hold a considerable influence in the society.

Continent

Namibia is located on the African continent.
