With cat owners wanting to keep their furry friends as healthy and happy as possible, there’s been a noticeable shift in which medications are being used to treat common kitty illnesses. While medications provided by vets and animal specialists are often expensive and ineffective, new, alternative methods such as CBD are proving a far better value for money.

If you’ve been considering CBD oil for your cat, but don’t know much about how it works, take a look at the post below:

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is more commonly known for its therapeutic and remedial effects in humans. It is used widely as a daily supplement as part of a healthy lifestyle, promoting relaxation and aiding a good night’s sleep. Although CBD is derived from the cannabis plant, it is non-psychoactive, and legal and safe to use. Read more about CBD for cats here:

Aside from general health benefits, CBD has also been proven in numerous scientific studies to treat a variety of mental and physical ailments, including arthritis, nausea, anxiety and depression, chronic pain, and even some forms of cancer. While it is not used as a medication for anything other than treating epileptic seizures in the UK as of yet, the future looks promising for the herb.

How can CBD oil treat my cat?

CBD oil works just as effectively in cats as it does in humans. Like humans, cats have an endocannabinoid system, which contains CB1 and CB2 receptors. When CBD enters into the bloodstream, it alters these receptors, sometimes switching them on, sometimes switching them off. This causes the receptors to respond more to the desirable hormones and other chemicals in the brain and body, and less to the undesirable ones.

The health benefits of CBD for cats are very similar to those for humans. Administering a daily dose of CBD in your cat should help with the following:

–          Anxiety

–          Arthritis

–          Some cancers

–          Inflammation

–          Nausea and appetite loss

–          Epilepsy & seizures

–          Overall wellness

CBD cat treats may be beneficial for cats because of CBD’s anti-inflammatory, antipruritic and antispasmodic properties. These natural ingredients can provide your feline friend with all the care they need to stay healthy while giving you peace at home!

What are the side effects of CBD oil?

Like in humans, no two cats will react exactly the same to CBD oil- which is why it’s important to start them off on the smallest dose to see how they respond. An overdose may, at worse, make your cat a little woozy, but nothing more severe than that. It is recommended that you give your cat a CBD isolate, which contains only pure CBD, and no THC, which may make your cat feel uncomfortable.

How do I give CBD to my cat?

When buying CBD for your cat, you don’t necessarily need to look for a product that is for pets-only. Any oil will be fine- although, as noted above, CBD isolates are the more ideal option. Just make sure you’re sure of what dosage to administer, remembering that cats are a lot smaller than humans, and require a lot less of the compound for it to take effect. Work out your dosage at 1-5mg of CBD per 10 lbs. of body weight. Start low, and only work your way up if necessary.
