In the digital age, it’s become incredibly easy to simply do a search online to find an answer. While this has most certainly proved to add immense benefits to our lives – it has also lead to culture filled with myths and lost truths.  This could not be truer for the cosmetic surgery industry, especially with liposuction. Such myths and misperceptions have led to confused consumers, leading to misinformed decisions.

1.   Liposuction is for Weight Loss

When it comes to liposuction, one of the biggest myths that people believe is that the procedure is great for weight-loss. In truth, liposuction is not a means or medium for weight loss. In fact, many surgeons and experts have warned consumers not to expect a significant change as far as weight-loss. The entire purpose behind liposuction is really to help improve aesthetic appearance. Keep in mind this is a cosmetic procedure, not a weight-loss procedure.

2.   Liposuction is Painless

If you are being told that liposuction is painless, it’s not the truth. The truth is that each human being experiences pain at a different degree. Simply because one patient claims they did not experience any pain does not mean the same is true for another patient. With that being said, the amount of discomfort or pain that one will experience depends entirely upon the specific area being targeted. Evidently, the larger the area, the increase chances of discomfort or pain.

3.   Liposuction is for Women

At one point in time, many people thought that liposuction was for women only. However, this is far from the truth as more and more men are signing up and heading to plastic surgeon offices to inquire about liposuction. In fact, in accordance to Men’s News Daily, there is a significant rise in the amount of men heading in for liposuction. Here’s a fun fact for you: the only primary difference between the procedure for men and women is the costs; and a surgery for a man costs more than a female.

4.   Liposuction Removes Cellulite

One of the biggest misperceptions that people believe with liposuction is that this cosmetic procedure can remove cellulite. Now, while it would seem convenient that this procedure could do this – the American Academy of Dermatology has made it known that it’s NOT a qualified treatment by any means. In fact, according to their studies, liposuction may actually accentuate cellulite. As a result, dimpling make become more apparent in some patients.

5.   Age Matters

With many different surgical procedures, it’s easy to assume that age is a determinant factor as to whether an individual can get liposuction or not. To the surprise of many people, hence why it’s a myth, age does not really matter. The determinant factor with this procedure comes down to overall health and well-being. To pass the medical examination – an individual simply needs to prove that their body is in good enough shape to handle the procedure. This includes, but not limited to, mental, physical, and emotional health.
