Reimagining urban landscapes with a layered garden approach
In Shanghai, TROP: terrains + open space introduces Yanlord Arcadia, a residential project transforming conventional courtyards into a sequence of vibrant outdoor spaces. Centered around a ‘Garden-within-a-Garden’ concept, this design merges water, planting, architecture, and pathways to craft a nuanced landscape experience. Carefully segmented into four unique garden realms, the project seamlessly links residential buildings with their lush surroundings while balancing communal and personal spaces.

The art of spatial connection: four distinctive gardens
The landscape design team from TROP organizes the first courtyard, ‘Veiled in Glimmers’, around an airy pavilion made with translucent frosted glass. Enclosed by reflecting pools, the garden enhances visual continuity with adjacent structures. Balancing transparency and seclusion, water features and strategic plantings serve as connectors between nature and the built environment.
The second courtyard, ‘Lanterns in Sequence’, draws inspiration from traditional lantern geometry. Here, an elevated pavilion is supported by robust structural walls, creating four independent seating alcoves framed by water. Each alcove offers captivating views of gardens, aquatic features, and the sky, fostering diverse and intimate spatial experiences.

‘Half Water, Half Forest’, the third garden, integrates leisure with nature. Timber decks reach out over water, surrounded by forestry-like planting. Facilities include pools linked by a continuous water edge. The supporting amenities, including changing rooms, a bar, and lounge spaces, blend seamlessly with the environment, enhancing visual fluidity and accessibility.

The final courtyard, ‘Entering Tranquility’, focuses on smaller, contemplative spaces. Connected water features and leafy terraces guide you toward more secluded spots within the estate. A cleverly positioned main entrance ensures the central landscape remains pristine, while sunken seating and reading areas enrich the dynamic between architecture and nature.

Beyond boundaries: extending the garden landscape
The landscape strategy of Yanlord Arcadia stretches across the broader development. Fire access routes, discretely integrated into the lush setting, maintain safety while blending with the garden’s aesthetics. Upper-floor landscapes feature folded surfaces where greenery extends through hard paving, offering elevated views over public areas. This thoughtful design unites residential needs with green spaces, fostering a harmonious living environment.

This project, conceived by TROP, reshapes residential landscapes by integrating water features, circulation routes, and green spaces. Through four intricately designed connected gardens, Yanlord Arcadia supports daily activities while allowing outdoor spaces to evolve, proving that effective landscape design can gracefully interlace with urban living.

The layers of Yanlord Arcadia invite residents to engage deeply with their surroundings. Whether lounging in water-framed alcoves or strolling through artistically planted paths, each area promotes a unique interaction with light, water, and greenery.

Through its transformative landscape design, Yanlord Arcadia becomes a sanctuary that grows alongside its community, continuously adapting to its residents’ needs while enhancing the urban environment.
