IPS (In-Plane Switching) is a type of LCD display panel technology designed to deliver better color accuracy and wider viewing angles than older LCD technologies such as TN (Twisted Nematic).
How it works
In an IPS panel, the liquid crystal molecules rotate parallel to the surface of the display. This allows light to pass through more consistently from different viewing angles, reducing color shifting and brightness loss.
Advantages
- Excellent color accuracy – Ideal for photo editing, graphic design, and video production.
- Wide viewing angles – Typically up to 178° horizontally and vertically with minimal color distortion.
- Consistent brightness – Colors remain stable even when viewed from the side.
- Good overall image quality – Produces more natural and vibrant colors than TN panels.
Disadvantages
- Lower contrast than OLED or VA panels – Blacks often appear more like dark gray.
- IPS glow – A faint glow visible in dark scenes, especially from off-center angles.
- Typically more expensive than TN panels.
- Response times have historically been slower than TN, though modern gaming IPS monitors often achieve 1 ms GtG and refresh rates of 240 Hz or higher.

Is an IPS screen right for you?
An IPS display is a great choice if you:
- Edit photos or videos.
- Create digital art or graphics.
- Watch movies and TV shows.
- Want accurate colors for everyday use.
- Play games and want a balance between image quality and speed.
If your priority is the deepest blacks and highest contrast, a VA or especially an OLED display may be a better fit. If you mainly play competitive esports and want the absolute fastest response at the lowest cost, a TN panel can still be a reasonable option, although modern IPS gaming monitors have largely closed the performance gap.
