Revitalizing Linden House With Timber and Steel at the Irish Rainforest Guesthouse
Japanese studio Schemata Architects has artistically renovated an eco-friendly retreat located in the verdant Dromgarriff Rainforest, Ireland. This modern transformation connects two existing stone buildings with a sleek yoga studio framed in timber and steel.
Linden House, one of five guest residences spread across a vast 39-hectare forest in Glengarriff, stands in one of Ireland’s rare temperate rainforests, a recognized ecological sanctuary. Purchased in 2022, the forest’s new proprietors are committed to conservation and rewilding, partly by repurposing the guesthouses into a serene wellness retreat.

Seamlessly Blending Structures in Harmony With Nature at the Forest Retreat
Schemata Architects ingeniously redesigned one residence, merging two stone buildings with breathtaking views of Bantry Bay through a yoga space shared among its 10 bedrooms. According to Jo Nagasaka, founder of Schemata Architects, the vision was an extension that would foster a new yoga facility suitable for the environment.

The ground floor social spaces offer expansive bay views through a fully-glazed gable end. Its design features three ensuite bedrooms on the northern side, with additional rooms under high timber-framed ceilings above. The eastern wing houses four more bedrooms, including one with a double-height seating area that mirrors the bay’s enchanting scenery.

Innovative Design Meets Ecological Responsibility
Central to the guesthouse is the yoga studio, coalescing the redeveloped structures. It is sheltered by a timber and steel-framed sawtooth roof, featuring north-facing surfaces for indirect daylight and solar panels on south-facing surfaces to generate electricity. This distinctive architecture harmonizes energy efficiency with exquisite aesthetic, truly embodying eco-conscious architecture and renovation design.
“The hybrid design achieves a unique form, joining the buildings while respecting their angular orientations,” Nagasaka elaborates.

The architects carefully selected materials to echo the site’s original essence. Oak timber, native to the surrounding forest, is prominently featured, connecting architecture with its natural surroundings. White tiles and pale oak further accentuate this seamless blend, making the retreat a true blend of nature and innovation.
“Choosing native oak underscored our intention to link the architecture with local resources,” Nagasaka described.
A Continued Journey of Design and Restoration
Linden House is merely the beginning for Schemata Architects at this historic site, with future projects potentially including the reconstruction of a historical hotel. The firm is known for other notable works, including a concrete-walled Tokyo store for Le Labo and office spaces in Fujisawa City. This project stands as a testament to their commitment to sustainable and innovative design.
