From Nightclub to Knowledge Hub at King’s Lynn Library
In a transformative project, UK-based Hudson Architects has repurposed a disused commercial space in Norfolk into the inviting King’s Lynn Library. The design wraps the existing concrete structure with a skin of pale cement shingles, turning a forgotten nightclub and retail space into a central library for the community.
According to studio director Louise Boddy, the goal was to morph the building’s unsightly presence into an attractive, welcoming space. Positioned on the fringes of a conservation area and a bustling shopping district, the new design embodies a welcoming atmosphere. Retaining much of the original structure was crucial in achieving this remarkable transformation.
A Bold Architectural Approach
Among the modifications, a large, skylit atrium now forms the heart of the facility, introducing natural light while a newly glazed southern corner warmly welcomes visitors. The cement shingles cladding the building feature a palette echoing the nearby architecture, making the transformation both striking and harmonious.
Inside, the library’s concrete skeleton frames its interiors, contrasted by zigzagging timber stairs and panelled walls. The design allows the building’s history to tell its story, where its marks and imperfections gradually reveal themselves to visitors.
A Space for Learning and Exploration
The ground floor captivates children with a playful castle theme, featuring arched play structures beneath wave-patterned timber acoustic panels. Upstairs, open reading areas with long desks encircle the central atrium, ensuring a serene and accessible space for visitors.
On the second floor, educational facilities, including a training kitchen, overlook the city through large windows, providing inspiration as well as education.
In past endeavors, Hudson Architects demonstrated their commitment to sustainable design with a low-carbon home in Norfolk, employing cob, an eco-friendly construction material. Their work on this library continues their legacy of thoughtful and community-centered architecture.
