Visual artist Yvonne Mak presents a remarkable installation, “Sandbag Castle,” designed to address the environmental impact of traditional cement while exploring the innovative use of floating castle concrete. Situated in the Dommel River adjacent to Eindhoven’s Van Abbemuseum Café, this structure spans five meters in width and three meters in height. Composed of hundreds of stacked, sandbag-shaped concrete forms, the installation mimics the architectural features of a castle.

Floating Castle Concrete: Sandbags and Warning Flags
The artwork incorporates numerous design elements that communicate both structural and environmental themes. The sandbag-shaped modules, crafted from concrete, evoke temporary flood barriers, underlining the dependence on this innovative material in protective infrastructure. Atop the castle, red warning flags echo beach safety signals. These flags are embellished with a bespoke coat of arms symbolizing water, bridges, flora, and hands, highlighting the interaction between nature, infrastructure, and human influence.

Integration of Ten Innovative Low-Carbon Building Formulations
The project physically embodies over ten distinctive low-carbon floating castle concrete variants, including calcined clay, alternative binders, geopolymer concrete, recycled aggregates, and self-healing concrete. Developed in collaboration with main partner TBI and expert material and technology contributors, “Sandbag Castle” showcases both current and emerging structural alternatives aimed at curbing the CO₂ emissions associated with concrete construction. Utilizing these eco-friendly solutions contributes to sustainable concrete initiatives.
