If you’ve ever struggled with managing multiple medications while on the go, you’re not alone. Over half of Americans have prescriptions, with many managing medication several times a day. Yet traditional pill organizers remain inconveniently static, designed for sedentary life.
Enter Ashley Gyurich, an industrial design student at Western Michigan University. She has tackled this issue head-on with her Spring 2024 project, Harmony Smart Pill Storage—built specifically for the active, health-conscious individual on the move.
Design meets practicality
Gyurich’s design addresses the dual challenges faced by existing solutions. Alert-style dispensers cover notifications yet are cumbersome and travel-unfriendly. Meanwhile, compact cases provide no alert system or ample storage. Harmony solves these issues with precision.
This sleek, compact organizer features a clamshell design with eight compartments, a hinge opening, and a body crafted from soft-touch plastic. Its ergonomic, tactile shape resembles a premium tech accessory more than a mere pillbox. A vibrant push button and non-slip rubber base enhance usability, making it perfect for a travel bag. It even clips onto one seamlessly using a silicone strap.

The smart alert system
Harmony’s intelligent alert system is where it truly shines. When it’s time to take medication, a light ring pulses on top, audible alerts sound from the base, and notifications hit all connected devices. Whether you’re on a plane or during a workout, Harmony alerts you without fail. A tactile button grants access to pills, triggering four indicator lights that denote the quantity of each medication to take, ensuring accuracy.
Setting up is stress-free via an app where you log medications, including time, dosage, and case location. Forget tedious weekly sorting; simply fill the compartments as suits you, and Harmony handles the rest. USB-C charging with battery alerts ensures it’s always powered up when needed most.
A thoughtful design approach
Gyurich’s design philosophy centers on the ‘why’ of product existence and form. Harmony reflects this, dedicated to the active individual whose life doesn’t halt for medication. This focused design approach distinguishes a well-used product from one that merely exists.
Harmony steps into an underexplored space, merging clinical efficiency with personal convenience. It fits seamlessly into bustling lives, whether at the airport or in back-to-back meetings, offering a glimpse into the potential of everyday health tools.
