Epic Games has made its Quixel Megascans library free again, and this time the deal has no end date. The company first opened the collection for a limited period two years ago, when it launched the Fab marketplace.
Megascans is built from photogrammetry, a method that turns photographs of real objects and landscapes into digital assets. The library holds both 2D and 3D material, so the scans reflect real surfaces, not hand-drawn approximations.
The library currently holds around 23,000 scanned 3D assets. They include 3D models, vegetation, decals and custom materials, along with tileable surfaces that use physically based rendering (PBR), a lighting method that makes materials respond to light the way real ones do.
That range makes the library useful to several kinds of creators. Game developers, 3D artists, visual effects artists and architectural visualisation studios can all draw on the same catalogue.
As AI models learn from licensed scans, creators may want to safeguard their own work and data too. Why creatives should protect their work online offers practical steps worth reading.
Quixel says listings on Fab will be updated until November 12 so that items become free. Anyone planning around that deadline should check the current listings.
The company has also changed the Megascans terms. Megascans and Megaplants assets can now be used to train AI models. The announcement puts it plainly: “Your AI models can now learn from real-world scans to help you generate varied, photorealistic environments for your projects.”
Buyers who purchased a Megascans or Quixel Bundle on or after January 1, 2025 are due a refund. According to the announcement, refunds will land in their Epic Account Balance by the end of the year. Those buyers keep their licence and gain the new AI rights.
The Epic Account Balance is not limited to Fab. Buyers can spend it across Epic’s other products.
How licensing works for quixel megascans free assets
Fab has added Channels, which help users find assets that work with specific game engines. Licence options vary by asset, so buyers can match each purchase to the project they are building.
Fab also lists Creative Commons-licensed items. For paid assets, buyers can choose the Personal or Professional tier of the Standard License. Epic’s press release states that the Fab Standard License lets users apply assets, Megascans included, in any game engine or tool they choose.
To see what the quixel megascans free collection covers, browse the Megascans library on Faby. Furniture, architecture, creatures, vehicles and materials all appear in the catalogue, and the free listings are the place to start.
Once you have chosen assets, the software you edit them in matters too, and Adobe’s 2027 Elements suite with AI tools shows how automation is reshaping photo and video work.
This offer is now live, and the licence terms are the part to read closely before building with it.
