Born in Hong Kong, Johnson Tsang‘s journey into the realm of art started at an incredibly young age of four when he began to sketch. Over the years, his proclivity for drawing blossomed into a lifelong engagement with various artistic media, particularly clay, ceramics, and stainless steel. His relationship with clay started 26 years ago and has remained a constant source of emotional solace during tumultuous times in his life, such as the illness and subsequent passing of his mother.

Technical Mastery and Awards

Johnson Tsang made significant strides in his artistic career when he began to explore the potential of ceramics in 2002. He gained substantial recognition for his ability to capture the ephemeral beauty of splashes in his ceramic works. Notably, his “Yuanyang” series garnered attention and were collected by esteemed institutions such as the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taiwan. His mastery in capturing the essence of fluid forms in white porcelain culminated in international acclaim. In 2011 and 2012, his works “Bowls of Fantasy” and “Splash of Wonder” were bestowed with the Special Prize of Korea Gyeonggi International Ceramix Biennale 2011 International Competition and Grand Prize of 2012 Taiwan International Ceramics Biennale, respectively. These accolades distinguished him as the first Chinese artist to receive both of these prestigious international ceramics awards.

Contributions to Public Art and Institutional Recognition

Beyond his work in ceramics, Tsang has also been active in creating stainless steel sculptures and public art installations. Since 2004, he has undertaken commissions from a myriad of private and public organizations. His achievements in the field of art were recognized formally in 2009 when he was honored with “The Secretary for Home Affairs’ Commendation” by the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Moreover, since 2014, Tsang has served as the Museum Expert Advisor for the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, further solidifying his standing in the artistic community.

His meditation practices aid him in entering a mental state devoid of limitations, which he refers to as ‘Imagine Nation.’ This state allows him to visualize his artworks in a 3D perspective before bringing them into the physical world.

Tsang’s art has reached global audiences, with exhibitions in various countries like Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Spain, and Switzerland. Pieces such as “Security Summit” from 2015 explicitly critique societal constructs like ‘security,’ thus provoking intellectual engagement from the viewer.
