With only weeks until its debut, Disney’s animated film Hexed, set for release on 25 November, has rekindled a long-standing controversy. This time, the uproar centers around casting decisions and persistent accusations of “same-face syndrome” in character design. Amidst the casting debate, the announcement that Sarah-Nicole Robles, known for her role as Luz Noceda in The Owl House, joined the voice cast has revived discussions about the film’s inspirations.
Understanding the Debate
October 15, 2026 saw Disney chief creative officer Jared Bush dismiss claims that Hexed was influenced by the canceled show The Owl House. Yet, this latest casting news has prompted some fans to question Disney’s creative inspirations once again. The situation has brought attention to Robles, who also voiced characters in Encanto and Knights of Guinevere, highlighting her versatility and leading to mixed reactions among viewers.
Exploring past animation choices, Tim Curry reveals the gritty details of an iconic character that transformed the animation landscape.
Meanwhile, scrutiny continues over the character designs in Hexed, particularly regarding the resemblance between the mother and daughter characters, Alice and Billie Doe. Critics argue that Disney’s animation style tends to homogenize character features. This design choice, they claim, stems from decades-old standards prioritizing youthful features, a recurring theme in various disney movies.
Disney directors Josie Trinidad and Jason Hand explain that while the character Billie Doe presents a stark contrast to traditional Disney heroines, her edgy persona adds unique depth. The discussion also highlights the film’s ensemble cast, featuring notable names such as Henry Winkler, Dan Stevens, Rachel Dratch, and Ariana Madix, promising a vibrant mix of voices.
