Building a Vast Archive: The Film Camera Database
A new initiative named Camera Index is setting out to create a vast repository documenting every film camera made. Spearheaded by PPP Cameras founder Pierro Pozella, this ambitious project is assembling a free, searchable film camera database, as reported by Kosmo Foto.
Pozella is beginning this monumental task by organizing entries alphabetically, starting with manufacturers under the letter “A.” Already, brands like Agfa, Alpa, Ansco, and Argus are represented, with plans for a broad expansion to include numerous camera makers, models, and related gear.
The Vision Behind the Film Camera Database
Pozella explains on the site that the Camera Index project is a long-term commitment, requiring several years to fully realize. New entries are added weekly, prioritizing major manufacturers and popular models, before gradually delving into more obscure photographic history.
In an interview with Stephen Dowling of Kosmo Foto, Pozella said, “As a camera repairer first and foremost, I’m aware of what happens when knowledge isn’t recorded – and the gaps that occur. I strongly believe that compiling and sharing this information will help keep analog cameras thriving well into the future.”

The Challenges of Cataloging Film Camera Database History
The vast scope of the Camera Index project is evident in the scattered nature of film camera history, spread across collector forums, auction archives, and guidebooks. The pre-digital market teemed with transient manufacturers, regional brands, and scant documentation, presenting a daunting archiving challenge.
While Pozella’s film camera database represents a fresh attempt at organizing this history, there have been predecessors, including Camera-wiki and McKeown’s Camera Encyclopedia & Price Guide, the latter of which last published in 2004. Notably, McKeown’s guide is reportedly set to return online in 2027 with significantly expanded content.

Beyond the Gathered Data in the Film Camera Database
Still in its early stages, the Camera Index reflects the enormity of its undertaking. Although much remains incomplete, the goal is to develop it into a reliable and extensively sourced archive. If successful, it could provide the film photography world with a much-needed reference akin to the DPReview resources for digital cameras.
