Amid the buzz of BEYOND Expo 2026 in Macau, XREAL’s CEO Xu Chi unveiled a collaboration with Google that promises to redefine personal computing. The pair announced an exciting new project named Project Aura, set to launch globally later this year. These AI-enhanced glasses, built on Google’s Android XR platform with Gemini AI, aim to outpace their competitors.
The smart glasses landscape is booming, with companies like iFlyTek, METLEN, and Even Realities pushing the boundaries of wearable tech. XREAL is focused on creating eyewear that feels like glasses, not lab equipment. They sidestep the pitfalls of bulky designs by splitting processing between a sleek frame housing an X1S chip and a portable Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor puck.

Xu Chi addressed the industry’s learning curve with competing headsets, notably Apple’s Vision Pro. He emphasized the need for lighter, more user-friendly designs. Project Aura delivers a comfortable experience with a 70-degree field of view and optical see-through display, balancing utility and wearability.

Smart glasses have long struggled to define their purpose. Xu Chi presents a vision of an all-day AI assistant providing practical support across daily activities. Navigation and translation are merely starting points. With Gemini’s multimodal capabilities, XREAL is moving toward genuine ambient intelligence.

In 2025, global smart glasses shipments soared to 14.8 million units, and XREAL joins leading Chinese vendors claiming a substantial share of the market. The Expo showcased diverse approaches to form and function, with Even Realities earning commendation for their privacy-conscious design, featuring no cameras or microphones.

Xu Chi likened this technological leap to an “iPhone moment.” While such comparisons often falter, the convergence of hardware, software, and platform potential suggests that 2026 may indeed mark a pivotal year for smart glasses. BEYOND Expo underscored that these innovations are no longer fringe but at the forefront of personal tech evolution.
