Volkswagen’s distinctive design legacy expands into unfamiliar territory with the introduction of the Smart eBike, a pedal-powered creation developed in partnership with n+. This innovative vehicle blends aesthetic minimalism with advanced technology, offering two models: the Sport and the Crossover. Both are available for pre-order, with deliveries slated for the fourth quarter of 2026. Characterized by its sleek, flat-white frame, the Smart eBike conceals its battery inside an oversized down tube, creating a clean, diagrammatic silhouette.

The Sport model retains a conventional diamond frame and features a rigid aluminum fork paired with 2.2-inch urban tires, enhancing its streamlined profile. Meanwhile, the Crossover adds a practical edge with a 100 mm front suspension, a rear rack, and wider tires, supporting a utilitarian stance. A continuous illuminated line traces along the bike’s frame, contributing to its unique, automotive-inspired aesthetic.

An Integrated Digital Rear-View

At the core of the Smart eBike’s design is its unique digital interface nestled between the handlebars. This display not only provides essential riding metrics but also shows a live image of the traffic behind, courtesy of the integrated Smart View system. As described by n+, this setup marks the first fully integrated digital rear-view camera employed on an eBike. When vehicles draw near, a radar and camera system in the rear mudguard activate the rear-view image on the 3.5-inch display, enhancing rider awareness with additional blind-spot warnings.

The bike’s light strip along the top tube doubles as a daytime running light, shifting hues based on the rider’s actions—red for brakes, amber for signals. While providing added safety features, this lighting system currently lacks street approval in Germany and France.

Urban-Focused Performance

Both models utilize a robust 250 W Yamaha PW-X3 mid-drive motor, delivering 85 Nm of torque with a top pedal-assisted speed of 25 km/h. Yamaha’s automatic support mode adjusts power to terrain demand, providing assistance on hills while conserving energy on flat surfaces. The vehicle’s dashboard, reminiscent of Volkswagen, allows selection among six riding modes.

Housing a removable 490 Wh battery within the down tube, the eBike promises a range of up to 162 km, expandable with an optional 814 Wh battery. The Sport model weighs 27.5 kg, and the Crossover model, with its added features, weighs 28 kg.

Extending the Cycling Experience

Extending functionality beyond the bike, Smart accessories enhance the ride. A Smart Helmet equipped with accelerometers can detect impacts, notifying emergency contacts if unaddressed by the rider. Smart Glasses project navigation and alerts within view, forming a cohesive, intelligent riding system.

Currently, these eBikes await full production and certification. Their design elegantly showcases Volkswagen’s innovative approach to road communication—prioritizing safety and interaction through thoughtful integration of advanced technology. Whether in the light signals or the digital rear-view display, the Smart eBike reflects Volkswagen’s identity through high-performance, safety-oriented features.
