Set in the idyllic countryside of the UK‘s Isle of Wight, South Barn represents an innovative transformation led by Studio Weave’s founder, Je Ahn. Nestled near Cowes, this once-modest farm building has been reimagined into a 158-square-meter retreat that harmoniously blends simplicity with understated luxury.

A Personal Escape at South Barn

When the opportunity arose to purchase an existing barn at a working farm, Ahn embraced the chance to create a personal sanctuary. Despite a limited budget, the design exudes an inherent sense of luxury, driven by Ahn’s rare position as both designer and client. His approach allowed for agile responses to challenges, including market conditions and contractor capacities.

Studio Weave and Honoring Heritage with Modern Functionality

The Studio Weave team concentrated on preserving the barn’s original structure, which included several elements that are over 50 years old. The project retains much of the original material, exposed and repaired solely for modern living standards. The design is a celebration of the barn’s agricultural roots, seamlessly integrating old-world charm with contemporary living.

The heart of the home is a spacious, open-plan kitchen and living area adorned with large windows. Leading from this central space, a corridor takes residents to three bedrooms. The craftsmanship, courtesy of Mike at Imphouse and his team, breathes new life into the historical fabric. Landscaping, done in collaboration with Tom Massey Studio, complements the thoughtful interior renovations.

The Art of “Deep Reuse”

Je Ahn emphasized the importance of retaining the barn’s historical feel, stating, “You cannot design the feel of an aged building.” The project embodies “deep reuse” by repurposing materials found on-site, valuing their narrative and practicality. This process not only rejuvenates the architectural space but also reflects an understanding of contemporary living needs. Ahn explains, “This project creates a backdrop for people’s lives,” respecting both history and the future.
