Carver + Schicketanz created the Coastlands House for a retired couple in Big Sur, Califonia. “Majestic oaks rule this north to the south sloping site at the edge of the continent, the vast region of the Pacific lying to the West. A massive stone base combines the structure to the uphill slope, varying with the lighter steel and glass elements of the home. The great glass stacking sliders open to the patios beyond – giving great cross air-conditioning and a seamless connection to the outdoors. A sunny but neutral color palette was chosen to complement the simple building materials and juxtapose the bright blues of the ocean and sky and the glowing greens of the garden and hills beyond. Most of the carpets and many furnishings specially designed by the architects for this residence.
