A new architectural paradigm: innovative transformations
Recognized with an Honorable Mention in Buildner’s international Concrete Pavilion Competition, Re:Concrete explores concrete’s overlooked potential. Despite the resilience of concrete, precast elements can often become redundant before their structural life ends, typically leading to crushing and waste. By preserving these forms, Re:Concrete crafts a functional, public space, showcasing the concealed infrastructure usually lying beneath the city. Indeed, the initiative turns unused materials into opportunities for social engagement.
Components initially engineered to transport water are repurposed into spaces for social interaction and reflection. This pavilion offers an intriguing glimpse into the material systems of urban environments, demonstrating how leftover structures become vibrant civic facilities.

A modular and flexible design
The pavilion employs standard precast concrete pipes, with each section around 2.1 meters in diameter and 2.5 meters in length. Surplus or decommissioned sections, after inspection, are either kept whole or cut into segments. These are then ingeniously rotated and combined at various heights to form dynamic configurations.
Ground-level sections become walls and informal seating, while elevated cylinders create hanging volumes and circular light wells. Openings between elements frame scenic ocean views, while light filters through and dances on concrete surfaces, enhancing the pavilion’s allure.
Retaining the pipes’ recognizable features, the pavilion’s design emphasizes their natural textures and visible joints. The assembly’s modular nature allows for expansion and reconfiguration, adapting to the availability of reclaimed materials, ensuring resources are reused rather than wasted.
