In the lush valleys of Zibo, Shandong Province, the “Circle Pit” installation by Studio Clash wraps a set of Xiangchun trees and a solitary rock within its delicate embrace. Nestled among vibrant greenery, this innovative structure blends landscape, community gathering, and environmental preservation into a cohesive spatial experience.
The installation revolves around four mature Xiangchun trees, or Toona sinensis, known locally for their cultural significance and connection to seasonal rituals. These trees, anchoring the installation, became a part of the design narrative, embodying local identity and continuity.
Innovative Design and Purpose
“Circle Pit” echoes the dynamic movement found in live music events. The design is both functional and symbolic, acting as a platform for gatherings and performances. This adaptable space is composed of tiered, circular platforms that seamlessly integrate into the natural setting, transforming the once open grassy area into a structured space enriched with purpose and meaning.

Structurally Sound and Environmentally Conscious
Standing 2.3 meters above ground, the central spiral structure offers a panoramic viewing platform. Beneath this, circular seating provides a more enclosed setting, suitable for informal gatherings and children’s play. The installation’s versatility shines as it alternates between seating, stage, observation deck, and play area.
Constructed with a modular steel framework, the installation’s components can be easily disassembled and relocated, underscoring a sustainable approach. Perforated panels minimize visual impact while ensuring a harmonious connection to the surrounding landscape.

A Nighttime Transformation
Integrated LED lighting, placed strategically beneath handrails, illuminates the installation at night, casting a gentle glow through the perforations. This creates a striking lantern-like effect, enhancing the valley’s ambiance and extending the pavilion’s utility beyond daylight hours.
This thoughtful approach respects nature’s unpredictability while encouraging community engagement in a serene environment. The seamless adaptability and respect for the natural landscape make “Circle Pit” a significant addition to Zibo, inviting collective experiences around its thriving Xiangchun trees.
