A Sustainable Wayfinding System Deeply Rooted in the Badlands
In Medora, North Dakota, the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library stands seamlessly embedded within the rugged landscape of the Badlands. Designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with JLG Architects, the library’s campus connects three pivotal institutions across vast indoor and outdoor settings. With an emphasis on continuity and ecological responsibility, Studio Loutsis was tasked with designing the library’s comprehensive signage, wayfinding, and donor recognition system. Their approach treats graphic wayfinding as a cohesive architectural feature, integrated deeply with the surrounding natural and built environment.

Uniting Design Elements with a Sustainable Approach
To synchronize varied design scales—from large exterior markers to trail placards—Studio Loutsis partnered with Commercial Type to create a bespoke typeface, complemented by a unique iconography system. The environmental navigation aids include exterior elements such as sturdy timber pylons, directional panels, and detailed campus maps, which feature dark metal dimensional lettering. These are engineered to endure the harsh North Dakota weather, designed to evolve aesthetically alongside the building’s exterior materials.

Commitment to Sustainable Practices
Adhering to the Living Building Challenge’s rigorous sustainability benchmarks, all materials used, including non-toxic coatings and mechanical assemblies, meet strict ecological criteria. Within the library’s interior, the sustainable signage sees signage directly mounted on vertically articulated timber partitions through custom-milled infill blocks. A highlight of the central lobby’s design is the ‘Wall of Gratitude’, which seamlessly incorporates donor wood panels into the architectural cladding.
