Tucked away in the serene woods of Great Park Farm, East Sussex, the 38-square-metre Yogi’s Cabin by UK studio Built Works transcends the traditional concept of architecture. This secluded retreat, adjacent to a natural swimming pond, is designed to harmonize with its surroundings, offering a tranquil escape.

The cabin is a creation for Architects Holiday, a hospitality initiative by Built Works, focusing on unique, restorative practices. Unlike their previous project, the Drying Shed Sauna, Yogi’s Cabin centers around yoga, celebrating movement and stillness amidst dappled woodland light. Its barn-like form, clad in estate-grown, charred larch using the yakisugi technique, roots it deeply into its natural setting.

Thoughtful design merging light and time

The cabin’s layout follows an east-west axis, with expansive sliding openings framing serene woodland views. Morning light invites practitioners inward, while evening light bathes the decking areas. This approach aligns the building with the daily solar path, creating a rhythmic interaction with the environment.

Drawing inspiration from both Japanese domestic architecture and local farm buildings, Yogi’s Cabin features deep eaves and a continuous perimeter deck reminiscent of a Japanese engawa. Its agricultural-style massing integrates seamlessly with the rural English landscape, all while the dark charred wood cladding merges the structure with the surrounding forest.

A minimalist interior focused on purpose

Inside, simplicity reigns. The restrained use of materials, with sliding screens and timber surfaces, fosters a peaceful and adaptable space. The interior houses essential amenities, including a king-size bedroom, luxury shower room, outdoor bath, and fully equipped kitchen, designed to support rather than dominate the experience.

Completed in Spring 2026, Yogi’s Cabin defies the excesses of typical wellness architecture. Built Works has crafted not just a retreat, but an experience that invites visitors to slow down and reconnect with the natural world through its understated elegance.
