Born in Croatia, Emanuela Lekić is an artist creating captivating works that explore the complex nature of shelter. Her series “Marvelous Problems” delves into the paradoxical role of homes as havens and traps, utilizing the aesthetic of paper theatre to reveal fragile boundaries. Her unique perspective has gained her recognition in the art community.

Artistic Approach and Themes

Lekić, who earned her BA and MA in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, ingeniously combines painting with three-dimensional models to craft her distinctive scenes. Her artwork examines themes of displacement, belonging, and the duality of protection and exposure. The environments she creates appear idyllic yet gradually unveil an unsettling undercurrent, often highlighted by surreal imagery.

Visual Storytelling and Symbolism

The series makes powerful use of paper theatre aesthetics, serving as a metaphor for life’s delicate structures. Lekić’s striking compositions reveal how spaces, shaped by both desire and fear, can cross into realms of unnatural perfection. This tension invites viewers to reflect on the coexistence of beauty and discomfort, underscoring the precarious balance between safety and vulnerability found in her work, highlighting the “shelter paradox”.

As a testament to her compelling narrative and artistic skill, Lekić recently participated in the 2026 Book Award open call and was shortlisted for her outstanding work.
