Land Rover‘s Defender has long been the default 4×4 for Scottish estates and school runs. Now nine Chinese off-roaders, led by the yangwang u8 defender rival, are arriving in the UK with boxy profiles, heavy tech and lower prices.

The Defender has beaten challengers from Japan, Korea and the United States. Few have matched its heritage or its appeal to UK buyers. That record is now under pressure.

Chinese premium off-roaders are copying the Defender’s brutalist shape and adding plug-in hybrid systems and cutting-edge tech. Cost-conscious UK buyers are paying attention. The Jaecoo 7, styled after the Range Rover, is the second best-selling car in the UK so far this year.

Cost-conscious European buyers are weighing up electric alternatives too, and Hyundai Ioniq 3 and Its Competitive European Pricing shows how design and value are shifting in that market.

Yangwang U8 defender leads the charge

The Yangwang U8 is the ultra-luxury sub-brand of BYD. Former Lamborghini designer Wolfgang Egger created the plug-in hybrid. The yangwang u8 defender weighs 3.4 tonnes and looks like a Defender that has spent time in a cyberpunk gym.

The yangwang u8 defender uses four independent electric motors. These allow 360-degree turns on the spot, similar to the Mercedes G 580. It can also float on water during a flash flood. Pricing for the yangwang u8 defender starts at £120,000, which is more than the average Land Rover.

Cheaper rivals arrive

The BYD Ti7 is closer to a sibling than a rival. The seven-seater has a boxy frame and brick-like proportions. It starts at under £48,000, while the cheapest five-door Land Rover costs £64,000.

The Ti7 uses BYD’s DM-p plug-in hybrid system. It produces 408bhp and reaches 62mph from a standstill in 4.8 seconds. BYD quotes a 74-mile electric range.

The Denza Boa 5 is another BYD product, also designed by Wolfgang Egger. It sits on a traditional ladder-frame chassis. Its hybrid drivetrain produces 537bhp, and the range starts at £69,000.

The Jetour T2 is a mid-size SUV from Chery’s Jetour sub-brand. It is expected in UK showrooms in 2027. Its 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine is expected to cost as little as £41,000, even as diesel loses ground. Former Porsche designer Hakan Saracoglu shaped its exterior.

The iCAUR V27 is a Defender-style SUV with a hybrid powertrain. It is due on sale early in 2027 at around £46,000. It will launch the iCAUR brand in the UK. In China, the marque is called iCAR. It was renamed abroad to avoid a copyright dispute with Apple.

Sales of the BAIC Xingtan 5X have only just started in China. Anthony Lo designed it. He trained at the Royal College of Art and previously worked at Lotus, Saab and Ford. The 5X offers several powertrain options.

The BAW Beijing BJ212 was on display at this year’s Paris Motor Show. It is one of many defender doppelgangers on show, and it shows the Defender’s influence clearly.

Off-road ability depends on more than shape, as these 3D-Printed Airless Wheels for Ukrainian Military Vehicles reveal.

Freelander returns as a six-seater

Jaguar Land Rover has taken a different route. It has partnered with Chery to build the Freelander 8. The original Freelander was replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2015.

JLR owns the Freelander name and led the design of the new car. Chery supplied the body platform and engineering. The result is a full-size, six-seat luxury SUV, not a mid-size model. It uses an 808bhp plug-in hybrid system.

The Freelander was revealed at a summit in China in October. It is expected to cost from £40,000. Buyers will have to decide whether it is a proper Freelander or a Chinese budget vehicle.

Specifications for these models are published on Jaecoo.co.uk, YangwangAuto.com, BYD.com, Denza.com, JetourGlobal.com, iCAURS.co.uk, Xingtan5x.BeijingAuto.com.cn, BAWauto.com and Freelander-EV.com.

The Defender still leads the market. Price will determine whether these nine rivals can take a share of it.
