Transforming Tradition Through Design
Tokyo’s design house, KUMAnoTE / Hideyuki Kumagai, reshapes the essence of the numeral one in their inventive project, 1RIN. This collection emerges from the idea of placing a single flower in a uniquely crafted vase, using the numeral as a versatile design canvas that bridges diverse materials and techniques from across Japan.
The Craftsmanship Behind 1RIN
1RIN debuts with a trio of materials emblematic of Japan’s rich craft heritage. Hasami porcelain from Nagasaki, Takaoka bronze from Toyama, and Yakumo wood from Hokkaido each redefine the numeral with distinct regional artistry.
Every vase retains the silhouette of the number one while showcasing unique regional techniques. The Hasami porcelain offers a refined, white finish that draws attention to the delicate contrast between vase and flower. Meanwhile, the Takaoka bronze introduces a weighted presence with a dynamic patina that evolves through touch.
In contrast, the wood-carved versions from Hokkaido translate Yakumo’s bear carving legacy into abstract forms, with textured details that make each piece a tactile experience.

Dimensions and Design
Standing at approximately 111 millimeters, each vase extends its numerical identity beyond shape to include precise dimensions. This cohesion in form serves to examine how different materials and techniques can convey diverse narratives while maintaining a unified concept.

Exploring Japanese Artistry
The nuanced textures of carved wood and burnished bronze contrast strikingly against the serene porcelain, each piece embodying its craft’s history and future.
As a design initiative, 1RIN invites reflection on Japanese craftsmanship’s contemporary applications, highlighting the interplay of material, method, and cultural heritage. With every vase holding a single flower, these pieces bring a subtle artistic accent into daily life, encompassing function within a conceptual framework.
