In a groundbreaking collaboration, Beyond Leather has emerged from a partnership between premium leather company Elmo Leather and Madrid-based studio TetuánCrea. This initiative, supported by Soulem, aims to transform discarded leather into sculptural lighting, showcased during the Madrid Design Festival 2026.
The Transformation of Leather Scraps into Art
Leather, known for its durability and unique textures, often faces controversy for its environmental impact. However, Beyond Leather challenges conventional uses, taking offcuts and crafting them into stunning lamps. Each piece is unique, showcasing the intricate textures and colors that make leather a timeless material. Designers Estrella Poza Ruiz and Ilaria Franceschini focused on turning what could have been waste into functional art, highlighting the process over the final product.

Sustainability Meets Craftsmanship
Elmo Leather’s commitment to sustainability is evident in this project, which aligns with their goal to integrate eco-friendly practices into design. By treating leather waste as a valuable resource rather than a shortcut, Beyond Leather presents a new narrative for sustainable materials. Marta Pascual, Project Lead at U-Ak Social Design Project, emphasizes that the true value is in the process, where collaboration and craft turn waste into employment and opportunity.

A Network of Collaboration and Respect
This project showcases a shift from linear consumption to circular design, fostering a community of shared creation. It’s not just about making beautiful objects; it’s about creating systemic change and new opportunities. Beyond Leather not only reimagines the potential of leather scraps but also the human stories behind their creation.
