Furniture production often hides a significant waste problem, with more raw material discarded than used in the final product. Challenging this inefficiency, Germany’s Momentum Studio approached their 06 Side Table with a unique perspective: start with the material constraints as the creative foundation.
Reverse-engineering for minimal waste
Momentum Studio didn’t follow the usual path of designing a form first. Instead, they focused on extracting an elegant shape from a flat sheet of aluminum with minimal waste. The result is a table design that uses 96% of the raw aluminum, leaving only 4% as scrap. The studio achieved this by precisely nesting the laser-cut components, allowing them to keep costs down and price the table at €265 without compromising on their commitment to German manufacturing.
Bauhaus-inspired elegance
The 06 Side Table boasts a silhouette reminiscent of the Bauhaus era. Its form consists of two rectangular panels with rounded corners, each adorned with large circular cutouts. Inside, a circular shelf and a matching round tabletop complete the design. Despite its simplicity, reducing the geometry further would be a challenge. Constructed from Aluminium AlMg3, each piece is hand-brushed and waxed for a raw finish that will age gracefully over time. Much like the illuminated sculptural objects by Maison Aetherion, the 06 Side Table resonates with a timeless elegance that transcends fashion trends.
Design for longevity
The table weighs 6.75kg and measures 47cm x 47cm x 47.5cm, using stainless steel screws. It arrives flat-packed and can be assembled tool-free in about five minutes. This practicality is matched by its aesthetic, offering a lower shelf for books or small items and a tabletop suitable for daily essentials.
Momentum Studio’s design philosophy emphasizes using materials for their durability. They create objects meant to age gracefully and endure, aiming for their pieces to last generations. The 06 Side Table is more than just a piece of furniture—it’s a testament to intelligent design and resourceful creativity, akin to MVLab’s Orion PDA, which revives retro charm with modern sustainability.
