Senser Woodcraft’s Creations: A playful hand with a practical twist
On a shelf sits a hand, carved from beech wood. At first glance, it appears ordinary—until you count the fingers. Six. This whimsical detail is the hallmark of Senser Woodcraft, a studio blending artistry with functionality. Senser Woodcraft’s creations, carried in the Moss and Fog Shop since late summer, defy easy categorization, merging sculpture, utility, and humor.

A family tradition steeped in craftsmanship
Senser’s roots delved deep. Founded in 2015 by Hugo and his cousins in central China, their journey into wood wasn’t by chance. “They were raised in a woodworking family who worked with wood and carved statues for Buddhist temples,” Lydia, Hugo’s wife and co-founder, shares. After studying in art schools in China, Europe, and the U.S., they melded traditional knowledge with modern design.
Senser, meaning to notice the small details, embodies their philosophy. They stick to solid wood, emphasizing the tactile experience through multiple rounds of sanding to a fine finish.

A tale of two workshops
When Hugo and Lydia met in Paris in 2022, life took them to New York, where they established a second workshop. Their studio thrives across continents. “Early woodworking is done in China,” Lydia explains, “while finishing happens in New York.” Their process defies simple labels, reflecting a seamless east-west collaboration.
Each day bridges design and production, as new ideas emerge from subtle observations made in the workshop.

The journey from concept to creation
Lydia details their creative process, focusing on their iconic six-fingered hand. “It plays on familiarity,” she says. “Even minor changes can feel strange.” Achieving balance between surprise and naturalness, they refine the hand’s silhouette through CNC precision and meticulous hand-finishing.

The More Fingers Jewelry Stand
This playful yet practical piece originates from a child’s wish for more fingers to wear rings. “It was Hugo’s niece’s idea,” Lydia recounts. With the More Fingers series, the extra digit serves a real purpose while entertaining.

Nature-inspired innovations in wood
Senser’s other creations, inspired by river rocks, play with perception through hidden magnets that let their wooden stones defy gravity. “It’s about reimagining nature’s designs,” Lydia explains. Using sapele wood, with its dynamic grain patterns, these pieces invite tactile exploration.

Another set crafted from five different woods further showcases the uniqueness of each material, creating a tactile and visual experience.

The subtle details that matter
For Senser, the unseen details, like the softness of an edge or the character of wood grain, make all the difference. These meticulous choices, though rarely noticed, enrich the sensory pleasure of their pieces.

Balancing artistry with craftsmanship
The challenges of handmade production in a digital world are not lost on Senser. Each piece takes time, but the result—a tactile delight—is worth the wait. “It’s best when customers say it feels even better in person,” Lydia notes. This commitment to quality ensures their work stands out in any setting.

Looking to the future
Senser continues to innovate, drawing inspiration from places like Arches National Park. New designs, still in development, reflect their ongoing pursuit of perfection.
