Reviving Retro Charm with Modern Craftsmanship
Cassette tapes have made a surprising comeback, with US sales reaching 436,400 in 2023, up from about 80,000 in 2015 according to Luminate. Swedish designer Love Hultén addresses the storage challenge with a bespoke, wall-mounted cassette display for client Melted Veldt. This unit doubles as a music player, featuring a late-1990s Sony Walkman WM-EX655. The custom-designed cabinet, crafted from brushed aluminum, includes an oscilloscope screen, speaker grille, and keyboard-style transport keys. It’s not just storage; it’s a statement piece.

The Art of Reimagining Vintage Technology: Love Hultén Cassette Cabinet
Hultén, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, is renowned for transforming obsolete tech into artful wooden creations. This wall unit, though simpler than some of his whimsical designs, carries Hultén’s signature attention to detail. The innovative display features engraved lines connecting knobs and buttons, creating a circuit diagram aesthetic. An oscilloscope screen adds visual flair, dancing to the music’s rhythm, while a slot displays the J-card of the currently playing tape for easy identification.
The Last of Its Kind: Sony Walkman WM-EX655
Sony produced the WM-EX655 between 1997 and 1999, featuring a durable diamond-patterned aluminum shell, auto-reverse function, and Dolby B noise reduction. Hultén encases the mechanism behind a rounded window, letting listeners watch the reels in motion. However, sourcing such vintage Walkmans has become challenging, making this build potentially his last. The battery life might be extensive, akin to the original C-52’s 40 hours per charge, but exact figures are unavailable.
The design echoes mid-century electronics, with sculpted mechanical keyboard-like transport keys, toggle switches marked PW-ON and CH-ON, and a red LED indicator. Knobs below the screen mimic old TV dials, adding to its nostalgic yet straightforward user interface.
An Integrated Solution for Cassette Enthusiasts
This retro-inspired cabinet holds about 54 cassettes, lying flat with visible spines, enabling users to browse the collection like a bookshelf. The unit stands approximately 25 inches tall and 15 inches wide, differing from the bulkier C-52. A flat top provides a spot for additional decor, creating a harmonious blend of utility and style.

While FiiO’s CP13 portable player offers a nod to classic designs for about $90, Hultén’s creation combines functionality with aesthetic appeal, showcasing both the player and collection prominently. Though a one-off commission, its unique vintage tech design might inspire future mass production, incorporating its standout features of the sony walkman cabinet.
