Student-led selection and naming

In October 2025, students Raiyan Rahman, Rafan Rahman, and Alia Tamanha participated in Project Hōkūlani, immersing themselves in a week of astronomical discovery at the Gemini North Hilo Base Facility. Their task: select a target for the telescope. They chose NGC 7253 for both its scientific allure and its placement within Ka Lupe o Kawelo, a Hawaiian navigational constellation associated with the Pegasus region.

Their chosen name, Nā ʻUhane Māhoe Huki Pū i ke Ola, not only describes the galactic pair but also reflects the collaborative spirit of two global observatories, Gemini North in Hawaiʻi and Gemini South in Chile.
