Exploring the city’s luminous enigma

As you walk through the vibrant streets of New York City, imagine the stories within each window you pass. Dave Krugman, a Brooklyn-based photographer, captures these tales with his camera, seeking out patterns and narratives hidden in the city’s architecture. Krugman focuses on how humanity interacts with urban spaces, revealing unique “humanity’s intersection with cities” through his subjects, ranging from portraits to cityscapes.

A project half a decade in the making

Several years ago, Krugman began photographing windows at night throughout New York. His series, an ongoing project, creates a mesmerizing tapestry of illuminated lives. Each window frames a small scene: a cat lounging, holiday lights twinkling, or intimate shadows playing against a curtain. These images, arranged methodically in grids, offer a broader portrait of city life—each window a testament to individuality amidst the urban sprawl.

Finding connection in the solitary city

“New York, despite being so densely populated, can often be a lonely place,” Krugman reflects. Through varied window scenes, he brings out a sense of “sonder”—the realization that each passerby has a life as vivid and complex as your own. His work emphasizes shared human experiences, portraying how community and commonality triumph over seclusion.

The randomness and artistry of Krugman’s compositions remind us of foraging seashells on a shore. As he puts it, “Layering that tendency over the built world, which often feels foreign and unnatural, reminds me that we are still an extension of the natural world.”

Looking to the future

Krugman is set to release a new project in collaboration with Transient Labs. It will unfold in two phases, offering both digital and physical art pieces. Stay tuned through his newsletter for updates. Additionally, Krugman leads ALLSHIPS, a culture company supporting artists.
