London’s Wright Office has crafted an intriguing residential project titled Radnor Road, nestled on a triangular infill site in Peckham. This 130-square-metre development consists of two stylish apartments finished with rugged bricks and soothing lime-washed plaster.
Bounded by mid-century structures, the building’s frontage spans a modest four meters, expanding to thirteen meters at the rear, which blooms into two secluded garden areas. The design pays homage to its surroundings with a contemporary twist, offering a journey from the dim, narrow entrance to airy, light-filled interiors.
A Journey of Discovery
“Our approach was to create a varied sense of discovery,” said director Alex Wright, “starting from the modest street frontage to bright, expansive garden views.” The unassuming facade, tucked between 1950s and 1970s houses, is adorned with a darker material palette that subdues it within the streetscape, revealing a vibrant rear elevation.
The ground level houses a thoughtfully designed apartment with a guest bedroom situated near the entrance. This leads into a vast open-plan kitchen and living area, adjoining a master bedroom that opens onto a patio garden. This section features rough clinker brickwork specifically around the garden patio and minimalist white interiors softened by warm timber floors.
Distinctive, Yet Quiet Architecture
“Our design intent was to craft an architecture that’s both distinctive and quiet, in tune with its environment,” Wright noted. As the developers and architects, Wright Office wielded full control over design resources, focusing on details that might be overlooked in small projects.
On the upper level, the second apartment boasts a living space and main bedroom, with an attic hosting a skylit bathroom and spare bedroom. A staircase leads directly to a private garden, adding a touch of tranquility to urban life.
