Immersed in Nature: A Unique Architectural Vision

Local architect Tom Kneepkens has brought to life Forest Villa MB, a striking residence in the forests of Noordwijk, South Holland. Graced by a distinctive gridded timber roof, the villa embodies a seamless blend of living space and nature. Expanses of full-height glazing frame the surrounding woodlands, uniting the indoors with the lush forest outside.

A Harmonious Integration with the Natural Landscape

The standout feature of the villa is its space frame roof structure, crafted from deep, dark timber beams. Within the home’s interiors, these beams remain exposed, extending outward at the edges to bracket the enchanting forest views. This intentional design choice emphasizes the unique relationship between architecture and nature.

“The essence of the design is to merge living with nature,” Kneepkens explained. “The space frame establishes a framework where architecture and the natural world converge, allowing the structure to adapt harmoniously to its surroundings,” he added.

Architectural Elegance with a Natural Embrace

Perched on a pale concrete plinth, Forest Villa MB features rooms flanking a central corridor. Small, tree-inspired courtyards punctuate this layout, facilitating a flow between inside and outside. Darkened, intimate spaces such as the main bedroom and bathroom contrast with the bright, open living areas, where glazed walls and sliding doors reveal the verdant landscape beyond.

The rich palette of materials further accentuates this duality, with deep brown timber, dark kitchen carpentry, grey surfaces, and green furnishings. Externally, the home’s sleek grey walls juxtapose with the vibrant greenery designed by Studio Siebers, enhanced by slatted screens shielding the terrace.

Designing with Sunlight and Sightlines

“The villa’s spatial layout follows the sun’s journey, creating a dynamic interplay of volumes and views,” Kneepkens shared. “This design fosters a balance of openness and privacy while maintaining a dialogue with nature,” he continued.

Renowned for integrating nature with architecture, other designs in the Netherlands, like a project by Woonpioneers near Utrecht, echo similar themes. The photography capturing this serene villa is credited to Peter Baas.
