The monumental 62,850-seat Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, designed by Populous, opened in 2019 and emphasized enhancing the fan experience. Replacing White Hart Lane, this North London colossus spans 43,000 square metres, nearly doubling the size of its predecessor.

This versatile venue is not only the home of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club but also the first stadium outside the USA designed for NFL games, thanks to a groundbreaking retractable pitch. The natural turf retracts completely, unveiling an artificial surface ready for American football and concerts, embodying Populous’s vision of a year-round sports and entertainment hub.

Christopher Lee, managing director at Populous, emphasized the ambition to redefine stadium architecture. “We aimed to create a unique home for Spurs that resonates with the club and its supporters while setting a new standard for events,” he shared.

Collaborating with acoustic engineers Vanguardia, Populous designed the stadium like a concert hall. The seating, with a steep angle up to 35 degrees, immerses fans in the action, maximizing atmosphere and sound resonance.

The stadium’s facade marries metal and glass, creating a dynamic entrance marked by glass accents. The South Stand, the UK’s largest single-tier stand, boasts a capacity of 17,500 and is topped with a glass walkway. The five-storey Market beneath it offers an expansive space with a 65-metre bar. This vibrant space, accessible to all visitors, challenges the traditional hospitality hierarchy.

Lee’s commitment to a community-centric design has left a lasting impact. “The project didn’t just construct a stadium; it built a platform for community engagement,” he notes. By breaking down traditional exclusivity, the stadium has influenced venues worldwide.
