Reimagining the Hangang Riverfront
Snøhetta‘s ambitious Banpo Ecological Playscape captures the essence of what Seoul’s Hangang River could become: a vibrant, integrated landscape that reclaims the waterfront. Envisioned for the Banpo–Hangang River Connection Park and Cultural Facilities competition in 2024, the design reached the finals but remained unbuilt, leaving its legacy as a blueprint for future urban development.
The proposal spans an impressive 38,000 square meters, connecting the Banpo neighborhood with a riverfront long obscured by urban sprawl and expressways. Snøhetta aimed to marry ecological considerations with community needs, designing spaces that adapt to ecological shifts and metropolitan demands alike.
An Innovative Fusion of Ecosystem and Playscape
The playscape consists of two primary layers: an ecosystem and an interactive playscape. The ground level hosts reconstructed wetlands that filter water while supporting diverse species. By channeling nearby rainwater into these wetlands, the design proposed alleviating pressure on Gangnam’s drainage, not merely adorning the landscape.
Above, the playscape is a lively blend of plazas, gardens, play zones, and educational spaces, all designed for people of all ages—and even wildlife. This playful landscape includes a comprehensive array of guests, showcasing interaction within public spaces.
Architectural Harmony at the Expressway’s Edge
Central elements like a triangular platform create a striking landmark that arches over the expressway, forming sheltered spaces ideal for events while minimizing noise pollution. This platform integrates exhibition rooms, a library, and cafés, offering expansive views of the Hangang River.
Continuity defines the design; pathways seamlessly link ecological zones, cultural centers, neighborhoods, and the river itself. Although this visionary playscape will not be realized, it advocates a future where infrastructure, community, and nature coalesce into a unified system rather than isolated fragments.
