An Ode to Family and Creativity through Design
For Kasseem Dean, widely recognized as Swizz Beatz, furniture represents more than decor; it’s a familial language rooted deeply in tradition, much like his collection. Raised in the Bronx, he recalls his grandmother’s couch, wrapped in squeaky plastic, which also concealed adults-only barware. “Furniture’s always been a language of family,” Dean explains from his Harlem residence, which he shares with his wife, Alicia Keys.

These memories, along with his deep-rooted passion for the world’s most significant collections of Black art, have inspired Dean’s latest endeavor—a furniture line with CB2. Named Casa Dean, the collection includes furniture, lighting, and decorative accessories, paying homage to the artist’s family. “I wanted to create something meaningful and inspirational within the Casa Dean line,” he shares.

Dean’s interest in design surfaced during his rise in the music industry, beginning as a DJ and evolving into a famed producer by age 18 with DMX’s “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem.” Reflecting on his early design choices, Dean laughs, “Initially, I went for whatever was expensive and had a brand name. Like Gucci? Let’s get it.” Over time, travel and exposure refined his taste. “I’m a creature of culture,” he reveals.

Diverse Textures and Colors Define Casa Dean
The Casa Dean collection showcases Dean’s cultivated design sensibilities through diverse hues, textures, and forms. The range features a woolly taupe shearling chair, a red enamel console table, a green velvet modular sofa, collaborative artwork with Megan Gabrielle Harris, and smoked crystal barware. “The diversity of the collection and its palettes took guidance and open-mindedness,” Dean notes, highlighting the luxury decor approach.

Crafting the Creative Home
His foray into furniture design began with a connection he made through Alicia Keys’ manicurist. “Soon, I found myself in Chicago picking fabrics,” he jokes. Collaborating with designer Evan Jerry of Studio Anansi, Dean focused on creating pieces that are emotionally resonant and visually striking. “Swizz was thoughtful about how each piece felt and facilitated connection,” says Andrea Erman, CB2’s senior design director.

Yet, Dean emphasizes the learning process. “I gained a true education in furniture design with CB2’s team,” he shares. The family also actively engaged in the design process, often reviewing concepts at the dinner table, further contributing to the Casa Dean collection.

Designs that Encourage Personal Reflection
Every Casa Dean piece is aimed at nurturing a creative home environment. Emotional favorites include the “Lam-Louie” credenza, serving as a DJ setup, and a chair perfect for solitary daydreaming sessions. Dean’s beloved British racing green prominently features throughout.

“I want this series to encourage people to reflect and connect with themselves,” Dean reveals. “In a rapidly changing world, these designs offer moments of introspection and self-expression.”
