The dining table in this meticulously redesigned Potts Point apartment immediately catches the eye. Reimagined by YSG Studio, this 1929 Art Deco dwelling is tailored for a couple both over two meters tall. Before appreciating the striking bathroom or the rich toffee-hued lounge, it’s the glass-topped table, adorned with a unique carved cross in each corner, that draws you in.
Ingenious Adaptations for Height and Heritage
With 95 square meters on an upper floor with glimpses of the Opera House, YSG had a clever solution to accommodate height while observing heritage restrictions. Original door architraves remained, but internal doors were temporarily removed and reimagined to include an exaggerated Australian Red Cedar skirting. This ‘booster’ element preserves the building’s detail while enhancing the spatial flow.

Structural Innovation and Cozy Comfort
A bold move reshaped the dining experience—partially partially knocking down a bathroom wall for an angled bulge in the dining room. This allowed room for a Tasmanian Myrtle banquette, providing the perfect harbor view.
A Palette Inspired by Vermeer
The clients’ admiration for Vermeer is evident in the sophisticated palette. Walls in the dining room, hallway, and bedroom are lead white, complemented by lime-washed herringbone floors. Meanwhile, the lounge boasts rich tones of deep toffee, featuring an Edra Standalto sofa and an &Tradition Wulf armchair. The ceilings carry swirling magnolia-white patterns, creating a connection through the common areas.
Bathroom as a Sepia Snapshot
With lilac jacaranda walls and terrazzo flecked with jade and amethyst, the bathroom exudes an otherworldly charm. A Crema Khrusos marble vanity adds elegance, enhanced by Bocci 14s sconces and amber Flemish glass, reflecting the building’s historical integrity.
Cultural Connections and Elegant Apartment Design
The dining table, created in collaboration with Maiden Co, features crosses from culturally significant woods like Curly Maple and Huon Pine. These design elements are influenced by the ćilim, traditionally woven by Balkan women. The absence of literal ćilim underscores the subtlety and sophistication of the design.

Refined Kitchen Aesthetic in the Potts Point Apartment
Though the kitchen remains galley-style, YSG replaced outdated joinery with sleek stainless steel and Lauriana quartzite, climbing artfully up the wall to clad the rangehood—showcasing the studio’s ability to exercise playful restraint while honoring the apartment’s artistic spirit.
Distinctive and harmonious, this renovation is a testament to YSG Studio‘s mastery of blending heritage with modern needs, executed by Promena Projects with photography by Anson Smart.
