An Ambitious Design Rooted in Tradition
A sweeping bamboo roof defines a new community center in Senegal’s Casamance region, the brainchild of Afroditi Ioannidou and Vladimir Gligorovski. Their bold design, winning first prize in the 2026 Kaira Looro Architecture Competition, transforms the traditional impluvium house into a village-scale gathering space.

The Functionality of Form
The center’s structure, shaped like a relaxed arc, features dedicated spaces for a library, study area, and larger communal gatherings. This open arrangement allows for independent use during the day, yet facilitates larger events as necessary. The deliberate curves create a courtyard-like effect, harmoniously blending indoor and outdoor environments.

Sustainable Construction and Design
Central to Ioannidou and Gligorovski‘s plan is the use of local materials and simple construction techniques. Bamboo columns and beams form the structural backbone, while rammed-earth walls utilize laterite soil for sustainable building. Perforations in the walls aid ventilation, and adjustable bamboo shutters allow the space to transform as needed.

Practical Innovations and Environmental Harmony
An integral feature of the proposal is its approach to rainwater management. Water is directed from the expansive roof toward functional handwashing stations, while the gravel courtyard promotes natural water infiltration during the rainy seasons. This echoes the self-sufficient design ethos of traditional impluvium houses.

Recognizing Other Innovative Designs
Other notable designs in the competition include a Polish entry by Marta Kuczynska and Jakub Czak, featuring adaptable spaces with handwoven panels, and a Colombian submission characterized by a crescent-shaped, partially submerged structure. They showcase varied approaches to community architecture, emphasizing shade and construction simplicity.
