On Riyadh’s eastern edge, the King Fahad Sports City Stadium stands as a beacon of Saudi football and cultural gatherings since 1987. With the upcoming 2034 FIFA World Cup, this iconic venue is undergoing a significant transformation led by Populous, in partnership with the Saudi Ministry of Sports.

Preserving a national landmark

In preserving the essence of Riyadh’s beloved stadium, Populous retains key architectural features while modernizing its infrastructure. The existing East Stand and the distinctive Hive structure on the west side will be refurbished, maintaining the stadium’s familiar bowl while enhancing its capabilities for international events.

The renovations include a new lower tier, adding capacity by excavating ten meters into the ground. Excavated soil will be recycled to shape surrounding landscapes, integrating spaces like training areas and public facilities. Future plans also feature a football academy, sports center, amphitheater, and more, transforming the stadium into a year-round destination.

Reusing existing materials

Central to the renovation is the innovative reuse of existing materials. The stadium’s original roof canopy, no longer suitable for modern concerts, will be reimagined. Structural masts and cables will become photovoltaic shading structures in parking lots, generating energy and supporting electric vehicle charging stations.

Additionally, hexagonal cladding from the original structure will repurpose across landscaped terraces, while seats, sanitary fittings, and lampposts find new life in community initiatives. Over 400 trees will be carefully relocated within the new park.

Innovation in shading and cooling

To maintain its skyline presence, a new cable-net roof canopy spanning 36,000 square meters will provide essential shading. This modern canopy, crucial for a World Cup venue, merges functionality with the iconic aesthetic of the stadium.

Inside, an innovative displacement cooling strategy aids Riyadh’s climate challenges. Semi-automatic deployable covers reflect sunlight, reducing concrete temperatures by up to eight degrees Celsius, allowing for cooler environments during events.
