At the edge of Shanghai’s Luxun Park, a unique coffee shed by SHISUO Design Office elegantly nestles among the trees. The architects, Sanif and Changshan, have masterfully created a 290-square-meter shelter that seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings. Positioned between an existing structure and the park landscape, this rust-colored pavilion serves as both a café and a public thoroughfare.

Harmonizing with Nature

Adapted to its complex site, the coffee shed pays homage to the five existing plane trees. Instead of being obstacles, these trees became rhythmic elements of the design. The architects thoughtfully calculated the positions of slender weathering steel columns to embrace the trees, integrating bark and branches into the structure’s form. This approach invites nature into the architecture, introducing light, shade, and seasonal shifts.

A Passage Through Park and Neighborhood

More than just a café, this pavilion creates a pathway that connects the park to the bustling neighborhood. It provides a sheltered passage where people can pause and enjoy the surroundings, whether during a rain shower or under the sun’s intense heat. The grid of columns intersects with the plane trees, crafting a dynamic tension between organic and geometric forms. The architecture becomes an interactive canvas of trees and shadows.

Material Elegance and Practical Design

The project’s signature use of weathering steel establishes a cohesive aesthetic, inside and out. The steel’s exposed surfaces evolve with time, mirroring the natural rust of the environment. Inside, the pitched roof shelters a cozy café space with clever utility integrations. Red terrazzo floors connect with the nearby Marriage Registration Office, enhancing continuity through color and material. The terrazzo’s earthy red complements the oxidized steel, forming a harmonious palette.

Working With the Elements

The roof design intelligently accommodates the landscape. Strategic openings allow tree branches to soar, bringing patches of sky into the sheltered space. These gaps also let rainwater fall into designated planting troughs, nurturing the adjacent greenery. Such design choices highlight the project’s commitment to engaging with the site’s natural conditions, rather than controlling them.
