Strategically positioned alongside the Arlington Memorial Bridge on the Potomac River’s south bank, the project was announced by US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum last week.
“We are excited to share that after a lengthy anticipation, spanning over 125 years, we are on the cusp of starting the excavation work essential for the grand triumphal arch and military observation deck at Memorial Circle on Columbia Island,” he wrote on X. “This architectural marvel aims to honor Arlington Cemetery’s history, fittingly placed in the world’s most powerful capital.”

The monument, known formally as the Triumphal Arch of Washington, adds another feather to the city’s cap under the projects initiated by US President Donald Trump. Dubbed the “Arc de Trump,” it intends to surpass the Arc de Triomphe in Paris by almost 100 feet (30 meters) in height.
Approved in May by the US Commission of Fine Arts, Harrison Design’s classical vision includes three gilded angels crowning the arch. Inside, visitors will find a multi-level attraction designed to engage and inspire.

The ground floor will house ticketing and security, with spiral staircases and elevators leading to the higher levels. The main attic section will feature four exhibition galleries and public restrooms, culminating in an open-air observation deck offering panoramic views of the capital, a true representation of neoclassical design.
