Set against the serene backdrop of Zishan Lake in Xianning, Hubei Province, architecture studio Büro Ziyu Zhuang (BUZZ) has masterfully integrated four innovative cultural buildings into the natural landscape. This ambitious project, known as the Zi Museum, showcases the exquisite design by including a viewing tower and a rammed-earth workshop, designed to complement the neighboring Ziyouji resort.
Concrete Prowess and Seamless Access
At the heart of the project is the 3,000-square-metre Zi Museum, distinguished by its pale concrete structure and multi-tiered design. The museum is centered around a courtyard, with access designed to harmonize with the land’s natural contours, offering three separate entry points that emphasize the principles of this architectural approach.

The museum’s ground floor hosts versatile gallery spaces and a garden restaurant. A pivotal path leads from the main building to a lakeside viewpoint, providing visitors multiple experiences from the rooftop to the tranquil central courtyard, exemplifying the typical integration with the surrounding environment.
BUZZ architecturally interweaves academic exhibitions with social spaces, creating spaces both for art admirers and nature enthusiasts to explore the rooftop garden without traversing the gallery spaces, showcasing elements of traditional Chinese architecture.

An Open Labyrinth and Meditation Retreat
Inside, the museum encourages a dynamic, wandering exploration, akin to a Chinese garden. Positioning itself as an “open labyrinth,” it offers intertwined galleries and rest areas, fostering an uninterrupted viewing journey, reflective of this cultural architectural style.

Adjacent to this, the “meditation tower” showcases a spiraled staircase around a hollow core, with underground access leading to a secluded courtyard surrounded by metal mesh. This tower can host intimate gatherings and serve as an observational spot.

Sustainable Design and Integration into Nature
The project’s third element, a rammed-earth workshop, is discreetly embedded into the landscape, featuring a grassy rooftop accessible via a gentle walking ramp. Nearby, a bookshop with an overhanging roof provides a welcoming entrance, its glass façade opening to panoramic views of the surrounding scenery, further enhancing the architectural aesthetic.
BUZZ’s design ethos emphasizes organic connectivity between the buildings, linked through soft inclines, pathways, and lawns, ensuring the architecture blends seamlessly into the meadow without imposing rigid boundaries, a key aspect of their approach.
