Wood Installation Sourced From the San Francisco Dump by Barbara Holmes

Barbara Holmes‘ installation called Untitled; No. 5 is a site-specific example of one woman’s trash is another one’s treasure. The spiraling wooden work that was installed at 1045 Mission St. was entirely sourced from the city’s dump, turning thrown away limber into a kaleidoscopic work that crossed both the length and height of the gallery space.

“At first glance my work my seem oddly familiar or utilitarian,” states Holmes, “but on closer examination of the materials and their re-contextualization, the viewer may need to reconsider initial ideas as they discover more layers of meaning.”

Using sourced and reclaimed materials are at the heart of Holmes’ practice, delicately changing the untidy elements into aesthetically crafted pieces.
