The Flatland Horse: A Monument Reimagined

Studio Deng introduces a creative twist on traditional equestrian monuments with The Flatland Horse. This imaginative installation of plywood horse sculptures features eight interactive horse ‘doubles’ that visitors can climb, sit on, and explore. Each piece dissects the equestrian statue into functional parts, ranging from benches to slides, providing both form and utility.

Materials and Installation at the Seattle Design Festival

Featured at the 2026 Seattle Design Festival under the theme IN[FLUX], Studio Deng crafted two of these innovative horse doubles: Gate Horse and Slide Horse. Constructed from ¾-inch, 13-ply birch plywood, these creations combine practicality with aesthetic allure. Gate Horse frames views of Seattle’s skyline through its arched silhouettes, while Slide Horse employs a bridge-like structure for playful interaction.

Brown chenille stretched over a foam core framework provides the tactile element, suggesting the appearance of a mane or muscle. Each horse part is designed with precision and creativity, ensuring a fascinating interplay between art and functionality through this interactive sculpture.

From Festival to Courtyard: A Journey in Adaptability

The assembly project involved quick-installation techniques using nails, bolts, and L-brackets. Post-festival, these installations were taken down, flat-packed, and reassembled in a new location in Issaquah, east of Seattle, continuing their role as engaging public sculptures and as an art installation.
