David Chipperfield Design, part of David Chipperfield Architects in the UK, has pioneered a unique bathtub design using Okumè plywood. Traditionally, high-end bathtubs are crafted from enamel-coated steel, cast iron, or stone, with wood usually reserved for Japanese-style soaking tubs. The Tambre tub, however, is an innovation in using Okumè plywood, known for its application in marine-grade projects due to its warm tone and fine grain.

The construction of the Tambre tub focuses on simplicity and clarity. The design incorporates flat, assembled elements that are visually clear. All technical components are enclosed within the tub’s body, presenting a seamless exterior. Solid wood inserts at each junction add softness to transitions and maintain the continuity of the volume.

Launch and production

The Tambre bathtub was recently showcased in Milan and is set to enter production by Agape, an Italian bathroom brand. This echoes current design trends as explored in refreshing bathroom spaces without a full remodel, underlining the shift towards integrating simplicity and functionality into modern home environments.
