Salem S Charabi’s Delicate Lamp: A Fusion of Nature and Craft
The centerpiece includes Egyptian-Danish designer Charabi’s intricate lamp. This piece, crafted from date palm materials from Saqqara, banana palm paper from the Nile Delta, and limestone from the Galala Mountains, symbolizes the theme “Design for Presence.” It stands out in the showcase as an example of sustainable innovation.
“Inspired by traditional palm-cleaving techniques from qafassin artisans,” Charabi remarked, “the lamp integrates layered banana stems and sculpted limestone to reflect its origins through unique patterns.”

Yoonjeong Lee’s Adaptive Lamp Concept
Seoul’s Yoonjeong Lee reimagines utility by adapting a commonplace pencil to nail paper in her design process, leading to the creation of a sophisticated lamp. Lee explains, “The project evolved into a three-dimensional lamp by stacking over 5,000 layers of veneer to form a robust wooden table.”

Isabel Rower’s Upcycled Masterpiece
In a striking mix of sustainability and artistry, Rower transforms discarded furniture into new works of art. “The chair combines materials from Brooklyn’s sidewalks with layers of papier-mâché and a pulp composite,” Rower explained. “Finished with black paint and 1,500 ceramic beads, it symbolizes transformation within the design showcase.”
