Exploring a Retro Oasis Behind Barcelona’s Focacceria
Concealed behind a modest façade at Carrer Tuset 17 in Barcelona, designer Isern Serra unveils a remarkable hidden venue that echoes the audacious spirit of the 1960s and 1970s. Created for Grupo La Confitería, the venue is a tribute to the city’s intellectual counterculture, epitomized by the famed ‘gauche divine’ and nightlife maven Oriol Regàs. Entry into this intriguing speakeasy bar is through a refrigerator door, revealing a world inspired by Verner Panton’s iconic 1968 Visiona installation.
A Chromatic Tribute to Mid-Century Aesthetics in a Barcelona Secret Bar
The bar’s innovative interior, masterminded by Isern Serra, is a bold statement in color and form. A continuous carpet envelops the first lounge, casting an all-encompassing textile cocoon that echoes Panton’s design ethos. The central feature, a curved stainless-steel bar, creates dynamic reflections, surrounded by seating in a vibrant spectrum from yellow to deep blue. Recessed niches provide functional shelving and intimate seating, illuminated by overhead Multi-Lite pendants from GUBI.
Retro-Futurism Meets Space Age Design in the DJ Lounge
The adjoining DJ room takes a thrilling turn into retro-futurism within the intimate setting. Its design under a vaulted dome plays with Space Age elements and organic geometry. Concealed scenographic lighting shifts hues and tones with the music, enhancing the experience. Period-specific lighting, including Louis Poulsen Panthella lamps and &Tradition Flowerpot pendants, anchors the design, while a Tacchini Dana lamp serves as a central sculptural piece beneath the plaster canopy.
