French studio PCA-Stream has unveiled La Source Vive, a stunning copper-clad concert hall nestled amid woodland overlooking Lake Geneva in Évian, France. This 490-seat chamber music hall redefines acoustic excellence, echoing the artistry of a musical instrument.

Situated adjacent to Patrick Bouchain’s La Grange au Lac, this new venue complements the 1993 timber hall, offering a dedicated sanctuary for chamber music rehearsals, performances, and recordings. Together, they form Les Mélèzes, a vibrant cultural complex founded by philanthropist Aline Foriel-Destezet.

The design of La Source Vive, led by Philippe Chiambaretti and Patrick Bouchain with acoustician Albert Xu, integrates high-quality acoustics into its core. The creators viewed the building as a living instrument, exploring materials and geometry to enhance sound.

The planning involved intricate acoustic sketches, digital models, simulations, and thorough testing. The development of a digital twin allowed real-time acoustic monitoring, ensuring precision and refinement throughout construction.

The Copper-Clad Concert Hall and Its Natural Design
Comprising three distinct areas—a glazed foyer, the domed concert hall, and backstage facilities—La Source Vive harmoniously blends with its wooded surroundings. Landscape studio Coloco contributed by planting over 150 trees and 200 shrubs, boosting the site’s biodiversity.

A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Innovation
The foyer, rebuilt and expanded, connects the old and new structures, featuring a bar, ticketing area, and timber terrace. It includes an innovative rainwater system for landscape irrigation. Visitors proceed through a rock-cut passage into a welcoming lobby leading to the auditorium.

The concert hall itself is a marvel of design. Covered with pre-patinated copper tiles, the dome reflects light while evolving naturally to merge with its forested environment. Its skeleton—a concrete acoustic shell with a timber frame—lies underneath the metallic exterior.
