A vision above the earth embankment

Imagine a house designed to rise above its surroundings, offering a sweeping gaze over the landscape. Periscope House, created by MUS Architects, achieves this feat on the shores of Lake Żywiec, Poland. The location posed a unique challenge: an earth embankment blocking direct views of the serene lake. The architects transformed this obstacle into inspiration, creating a residence where elevation was key. A modern interpretation of a periscope, the house’s design elevates living spaces, allowing occupants to look beyond the physical obstructions.

The periscope-inspired design

This extraordinary home adopts a reverse vertical layout to optimize visibility. The ground floor serves as a functional entry point, featuring an entrance area, a two-car garage, and a spa delightfully connected to the western garden. Ascend to the first floor, and you enter the private sanctum where bedrooms and bathrooms are strategically placed. The top floor, a haven of glass, houses the living room, dining area, and kitchen, all framed by expansive views of Lake Żywiec and the majestic Beskid Żywiecki landscape.

Innovative architectural solutions

The extensive use of glass along the lake-facing walls blurs the lines between indoor luxury and outdoor splendor. A separate staircase on the building’s northern side binds these levels, while a smart freight lift in the garage whisks groceries and essentials directly to the upper kitchen level, streamlining daily life. The design elegantly reflects the functional essence and optical logic of a periscope, manifesting in an architectural form that embraces orientation, elevation, and visibility.

Blending form and function

  • The bold exterior is sheathed in white aluminum cladding, a sleek contrast against its natural setting.
  • Horizontal glazing meets the eye seamlessly, opening living areas to the natural backdrop.
  • The house becomes an instrument of viewing, celebrating the site’s topography as a defining feature.
